Liquid spilled on a MacBook: what to do
The first minutes count. Current flowing through a wet circuit causes the most serious damage.
⚠️ What to do, in this order
- Turn the MacBook off right away (hold the power button) and unplug the charger.
- Do not turn it back on or charge it to “test” it.
- Turn it over, open in a V shape, screen up and keyboard down, to let the liquid drain.
- No rice, no hair dryer: they do not remove the liquid under the components.
- Bring it to us as soon as possible: corrosion spreads every day.
Water
Less aggressive than a sugary drink, water still causes oxidation, especially if the computer stayed on.
A quick logic board cleaning is often enough.
Coffee or tea
Sugar and milk leave sticky, conductive residue, especially under the keyboard.
Logic board cleaning and, if needed, keyboard replacement.
Sugary drink or alcohol
These are the most corrosive liquids: the residue attacks components within days.
The faster we step in, the simpler the repair.

Should I put a wet MacBook in rice?
No. Rice does not absorb the liquid under the components and leaves dust behind. Turn the computer off and bring it to us quickly.
My MacBook still works after the spill: should I have it checked?
Yes. Corrosion keeps spreading for days and can cause a failure later. A quick cleaning costs far less than a logic board repair.
How much does a liquid damage repair cost?
It depends on the liquid, the time elapsed and the parts affected. The diagnostic is free and you get a quote before any repair.
Can you recover my data?
Sometimes. On recent MacBooks, the storage is soldered to the logic board and cannot be removed: the board must be brought back to a working state. We can try, with no guarantee, and we tell you honestly what your chances are.
How long does it take?
The diagnostic takes 24 to 48 hours. The repair time depends on the parts to replace.
Can I mail it to you?
Yes, by Purolator anywhere in Canada, unless there was smoke or the battery is swollen. In that case, bring it to our workshop.
